Hot Clean Energy Companies To Watch In Right Now: Stage Stores Inc.(SSI)

The company also offers sportswear, dresses, intimates, home and gift products, outerwear, swimwear, and other products. It primarily focuses on consumers in small and mid-sized markets. The company operates stores under the names of Bealls, Goody?s, Palais Royal, Peebles, and Stage. Stage Stores, Inc. also sells its products through its Web site. As of March 06, 2012, it operated 819 stores in 40 states. Stage Stores, Inc. is headquartered in Houston, Texas.

Advisors' Opinion:

Another earnings short-squeeze prospect is specialty department store retailer Stage Stores (SSI), which is set to release numbers on Thursday before the market open. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Stage Stores to report revenue of $397.57 million on earnings of 53 cents per share.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float for Stage Stores is pretty high at 11.6%. That means that out of the 30 million shares in the tradable float, 3.58 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 4.2%, or by about 145,000 shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of SSI could easily surge sharply higher post-earnings as the shorts jump to cover some of their positions.

From a technical perspective, SSI is currently trending above its 50-day moving average and just below its 200-day moving average, which is neutral trendwise. This stock has been trending sideways and consolidating for! the last three months and change, with shares moving between $17.51 on the downside and $20.32 on the upside. Any high-volume move above the upper-end of its recent range post-earnings could trigger a big breakout trade for shares of SSI.

If you're bullish on SSI, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $19.91 to $20.32 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that registers near or above its three-month average action of 233,200 shares. If that breakout begins post-earnings, then SSI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $23 to $25 a share.

I would simply avoid SSI or look for short-biased trades if after earnings it fails to trigger that breakout and then takes out some key

Stage Stores Inc.(SSI) said it agreed to sell its Steele’s retail stores to financial services firm Hilco Global later this year, which contributed to a drop in fiscal fourth-quarter earnings. The top line missed expectations, and the sales view for the year also fell below the consensus view.

Advisors' Opinion:

By way of example, let's take a look at three solid companies with some of the best profit margins in their sectors:

By the very nature of their business, financials tend to have wide profit margins, and Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) is no exception. The fourth-largest bank in the country in terms of assets, with outstanding customer service and a strong brand, WFC has a current profit margin of 25.5%. WFC offers a broad range of banking services, including retail banking, asset management, and retirement planning. WFC carries a market cap of $219 billion and a price/earnings (P/E) ratio of 11.3; the overall return for the past 52 weeks is 20.5%. Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) holds an 80% share of the world's microprocessor market, giving them a moat as wide as any brand on the planet. Intel invested $12 billion in research and development last year, far more than any of its competitors. Even though it briefly lost its technolog! y edge in the smartphone and tablet market, its Atom processors are becoming much more competitive. This should achieve more design wins and give Intel pricing power. Even though the stock is off 11% in the last year, its sheer scale and profit margins of 18.1% make Intel a sleeping giant that's about to wake up. Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) has a coveted gatekeeper's role in the financial services marketplace, with the bulk of its revenue coming from transaction fees. As e-commerce and mobile payments continue to grow, Visa and counterpart MasterCard Inc. (NYSE: MA) are in the catbird seat. Visa sports a fat profit margin of 47.2%, and the stock has more than doubled over the past five years. Earnings are projected to increase by 19.6% per year over the next five years. With a presence in virtually every country on the planet and the explosion of e-commerce payments, Visa is a great way to tap into a business with unlimited growth opportunities.

Getty Images Holiday shopping season is in full swing, and smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices once again top many shoppers' gift lists. Given how expensive many popular gadgets have become, one big question many shoppers are facing is whether or not to tack on an extended warranty to protect themselves should their electronic devices come to harm. They're Lining Up to Sell You Protection Retailers know that the best time to get you to pay to protect expensive items is while you are making a big-ticket purchase. For years, Best Buy (BBY), Sears (SHLD), Walmart (WMT), and other major retailers have sold extended warranty protection on high-priced electronics like computers and TVs. That coverage can be pricey, with Walmart having recently charged $65 for a two-year TV service plan and Best Buy offering two-year coverage on an $800 TV for $99.99 and five-year coverage for $179.99 . Appliance warranties can also be expensive, with Sears recent! ly chargi! ng $280 for a three-year protection plan on a $950 refrigerator. Protection plans for smartphones and tablets are also popular. Apple (AAPL) offers its AppleCare for its devices. Coverage to extend an iPhone's warranty and other protections for two years will run you $99. Other companies have sought to offer more comprehensive coverage for electronic devices, with Protect Your Bubble offering phone and tablet insurance for $7.99 to $9.99 a month that covers not only mechanical problems but also common mishaps like damage from drops and liquid spills, as well as theft or loss. Many Items Have Built-In Protection What many consumers don't realize is how much protection against common problems they already have, even without buying extra. Nearly every purchase comes with at least limited warranty protection for mechanical defects. According to Consumer Reports, most issues that would qualify for coverage under extended warranties tend to happen during the initial warranty period, making the extended co

Top 5 Long Term Stocks To Watch For 2014

freeloosedirt via Compfight cc

Advisers looking to quantify their worth in terms of the added return they can provide clients are being offered a concrete answer of 3 percentage points in a new report from The Vanguard Group Inc.

The first of five factors influencing this extra return has to do with behavioral finance. Keeping clients focused on the long term and making them stick to a regular investing plan can add 1.5% or 150 basis points, according to the report, “Putting a value on your value: Quantifying Vanguard advisor alpha,” which was released Monday.

Two of the most significant behavioral factors that derail investor performance are “the allure of market-timing and the temptation to chase performance,” said the report by Vanguard, which manages $2.5 trillion in mutual fund assets, explained. “Advisers as behavioral coaches can act as emotional circuit breakers by circumventing clients' tendencies to chase returns or run for cover in emotionally charged markets.”

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Berkshire’s ownership position in Coca-Cola may set the stage for something similar to Duracell—With Berkshire’s 400 million Coca-Cola shares currently worth $17.8 billion, and an estimated value for CCR (Coca-Cola’s North American bottling assets) of $12.8 billion (based on 8x estimated EBITDA of $1.6 billion), this would not be a large enough transaction for Berkshire to completely transfer its Coca-Cola stake. Of course, we do not think Coca-Cola needs to capitalize the business with $5 billion in cash, as Procter & Gamble did for Duracell to “plug the gap” between the valuation of the business and Berkshire’s stake, but that may be a possibility in this instance as well. However—call us crazy—we think Berkshire could also take a look at CCEAG, Coca-Cola’s German bottling business. We valued this at $2.75 billion three years ago6, based on $3.8b of revenue, a 10.4% EBITDA margin and a 7.0x multiple. We think there is upward bias to a current valuation given likely cost rationalization that has occurred in the intervening years. If we wanted to get even more creative, we could even envision Berkshire taking a look more broadly at European bottlers like Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) and Coca-Cola HBC (CCH), which have similar industry dy! namics to the U.S. bottlers. We note that some type of swap transaction, à la Duracell, could save Berkshire Hathaway nearly $5 billion in income taxes.

David Tulis/AP It's beginning to look a lot like ... the day after Christmas? On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers' attention to the day after the holiday. Amazon.com (AMZN) already is offering "after Christmas" deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy (GPS) is running TV ads that its "after-holiday sale starts early" with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS (CVS) was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve. Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas. "I'll probably start shopping for me at that point," she said. Stores usually wait until after Christmas to offer discounts of up to 70 percent or more on holiday merchandise that didn't sell. But Americans who are still worried about the economy have held tightly to their purse strings this year, and store sales have fallen for the past three consecutive weeks. The ! pre-Chris! tmas deals come as retailers are feeling pressure to attract Americans into stores during the final week of what's typically the busiest shopping period of the year. The two-month stretch that begins on Nov. 1 is important because retailers can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales during that time. Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively. Stores had a problem even getting Americans into stores, let alone getting them to spend. The number of shoppers fell 21.2 percent during the week that ended on Sunday, according to ShopperTrak. • [By Glenwoods]

Earlier this year the giant food processor, Cargill, partnered with the small Swiss company, Evolva (SIX:EVE), which was developing its own stevia-based fermentation process, also in the pilot stage. As noted earlier in the article, Cargill is in a partnership with Coca-Cola for Truvia, the bestselling stevia product on the market. The success of the Cargill/Evolva partnership could have big implications not just for Cargill and Coca-Cola, but also on the entire stevia and sweetener market. I further believe the success of the partnership could have a major impact on Stevia First. If Cargill's fermentation method produces a better tasting stevia product at a lower cost it would give Coca-Cola a considerable advantage over the other beverage bottlers, food manufacturers, and stevia producers. Such an outcome would force these companies to scramble to find a similar method in order to compete. There would be a very good chance that rival companies, in! order to stay in the game, would have to turn to the other company developing a fermentation-based stevia product-- Stevia First. If that happens Stevia First's value would rise considerably.

Top 5 Performing Stocks For 2014

I had the opportunity to hear advisor coach George Hartman speak this year at the annual Million Dollor Round Table meeting in Toronto. While many presenters I've heard lately focus on the clients to maximize their success rate, Hartman went in another direction. He said advisors need to look in the mirror, first, to figure out if they're doing things right and maximizing their potential.

He asked the audience to raise their hands if they believed they were doing the things they needed to be top-performing advisors. Hands shot up. Hartman didn't shake his head. "In fact, I am willing to bet that most of you are already performing at a high level in many aspects of your business. You wouldn’t have qualified to attend this meeting without having done many of the right things and done them well. . . Don't worry, I won't be wasting your time. Even the highest-performing advisors rarely do everything perfectly."

What the best advisors have learned to do, according to Hartman, is to "recognize their strengths and weaknesses and then work to capitalize on the first and eliminate the second. They have also come to understand that, in the dynamic world of financial advice, perfection is an elusive goal."

Advisors' Opinion:

In the past few weeks, I wrote two articles about TrovaGene (TROV) -- one detailing the history of the DNA market generally and the molecular diagnostics -- and TROV's place therein -- market specifically, and the second detailing the company's internal valuation. In this article, I will value TROV on an external, relative basis. Specifically, I will compare TROV to another molecular diagnostics company, Exact Sciences (EXAS), and try to show that while the market seems to have given EXAS a fair shake, it has not done the same for TROV. I will prove this argument by looking at both companies' addressable markets, and their respective progress at bringing the products to market. However, before we take this deep dive into both companies, I will take a moment to review each of the companies' products, so we have a strong background before turning to the deeper analysis.

    Friday's Volume: 712,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 183,106

From a technical perspective, TROV ripped higher here into all-time high territory with heavy upside volume. During that move, shares of TROV have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has also been accompanied by bullish upside volume flows.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in TROV as long as it's trending above its recent breakout level of $8.83, and then once it sustains a move or close above its all-time high of $10.20 with volume that hits near or above 183,106 shares. If we get that move soon, then TROV will set up to enter new all-time high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $13 to $15.
