Hot Long Term Stocks To Own Right Now

Last year’s underperformers should turn into this year’s treasure.

That’s the view Goldman Sachs(GS) analysts offered this week, as they identified 40 stocks — including Wal-Mart Stores Inc.(WMT), Cisco Systems Inc.(CSCO) and Citigroup Inc.(C) — that could outperform the broader market in early 2014.

The firm picked stocks that lagged their peers last year and had attractive valuations relative to their sectors.

“Buying stocks with low valuation is a proven strategy over the long term and especially effective in 1Q,” Goldman says.

For instance, lower valuation stocks have outperformed their peers by an average of 4.2% during the first quarter over the past 35 years, compared to a 1.7% outperformace rate through the rest of the year, according to Goldman’s calculations.
