Hot Cheap Stocks To Own Right Now

John Huber at BaseHitInvesting.com has written an excellent review of Walter Schlossinvesting philosophy. Mr. Schloss is a student of Ben Graham and never had a college degree. He made 21% a year for nearly five decades by buying cheap stocks. His screen can be summarized as the following:

1. Buy understandable businesses

2. Buy cheap stocks. He likes to buy stocks at around book value.

3. Buy stocks that have little to no debt.

4. Buy stocks that are at new lows (preferably 2-3 year lows).

We have created a Walther Schloss Cheap Stock Screen with our All-In-One Screener, which has more than 120 filters. The criteria we set are:

1. Fundamental Tab: Interest coverage > 10

2. Altman Z-score > 2.99

3. Valuation Tab: Price-to-tangible-book ratio< 1

4. Historical Valuation Tab: Stock price is at maximum 25% above the three-year low.

While Walter Schloss did not use the Altman Z-score in his research, we use the combination of interest coverage and Altman Z-score to satisfy the requirement of tocks that have little to no debt.An Altman Z-score of higher than 2.99 indicates that the company is financially sound. This is the screenshot of the Walter Schloss Cheap Stock Screen.

Since the start of the week, small cap nuclear fuel stock USEC Inc (NYSE: USU) more than doubled for investors, something that has not happened for investors in uranium stocks like Uranium Resources, Inc (NASDAQ: URRE), Denison Mines Corp (NYSEMKT: DNN), Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT: URG) and Uranerz Energy Corp (NYSEMKT: URZ). To recap: USEC Inc closed at the $6 level on Friday, but then it surged to the $15 level on Monday only to open at the $10 level on Tuesday when it ultimately closed at $12.46. So what in the world is going on with USEC Inc and is it time to revisit nuclear fuel and uranium stocks?

DS: Two of our top picks are Cameco Corp. (CCJ) and Ur-Energy Inc. (URG). For Cameco, we've got a $25/share target and an outperform rating. This company is the industry's go-to, the blue chip uranium company. It's organically growing very low-cost operations, which are for the most part in very safe jurisdictions. It has a lower-risk approach to contracts, with a targeted pricing mix of about 40% fixed-pricing and 60% market-related pricing in the contract book. The company's got a solid balance sheet. We think it's going to end Q3/13 with about $800M in working capital and another $2 billion [$2B] in undrawn lines of credit. It's also diversified across the nuclear fuel chain, with exposure not only to its core uranium mining business but also with nuclear fuel services, like conversion and fuel fabrication. It's got a stake in the Bruce nuclear power plant as well as a newly bolted-on uranium trading business, so it's quite diversified. On top of that, Cameco pays a 2% dividend. We think it offers a very attractive risk/reward proposition at these levels.

If you listened to my bullish calls from December 27th and/or February 24th about Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG), then congratulations - you're now up as much as 50%, depending on when you stepped into a trade, and which stock you chose. Now get out. See, as well as URZ and URG have done and are doing (URRE not so much), it looks like the short-term rally I first spotted a little more than a couple of months ago has fully run its course, and now these names are setting up a pullback.

Shares of certain tech companies are taking it on the chin in afterhours trading. At the time of writing, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) were down 2% and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) was off by nearly 3%. According to The Wall Street Journal, "The grim estimate of 76.3 million units shipped is the latest sign that consumers are shifting their dollars to smartphones and tablets rather than PCs, while responses such as convertible laptops and Microsoft's touch-oriented Windows 8 operating system haven't stemmed the cannibalization."

In the technology world, shares of both Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ  ) are slipping today. Big softy is down 1%, while turnaround hopeful HP has dipped 0.6%. Both stocks have had a fabulous run year to date: Microsoft is up 32.84% and Hewlett-Packard has risen 71.79%. Today's drops could just be the result of investors taking profits as we move deeper into the slower summer months.

Only two Dow components ended in the red, one of which was UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH  ) . Slipping 0.4%, investors in UnitedHealth are dealing with the fact that the dynamics of the health-care industry are changing as "Obamacare" measures go into effect. The financial impact on companies like UnitedHealth is by no means clear, which makes for anxious shareholders.

  • [By Keith Speights]

The reaction to the online marketplaces from some large insurers has been less than enthusiastic. UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH  ) CEO Stephen Hemsley indicated that his company would move forward somewhat cautiously. WellPoint (NYSE: WLP  ) also stated that it would only participate in 14 state exchanges initially.

The White House was planning a massive Obamacare marketing effort with the help of unions and nonprofit groups. That effort has apparently been put on the backburner.
The Obamacare news didn't help UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH). Its share price fell by .017 percent in mid-day trading on Wednesday. Yet it seemed to help WellPoint (NYSE: WLP). The operator of the Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans saw its share price rise by .01% on Wednesday . A smaller operator of healthcare plans, Molina Healthcare (NYSE: MOH) saw its share price fall.
