Top Low Price Companies To Invest In 2014

General Electric (GE) is a multinational conglomerate with well-diversified chains of businesses, but nowadays it has become more of a controversial company with many investors questioning the strategies being adopted by its CEO, Jeffrey Immelt. There are many people including renowned analysts that now hold divergent views about the potential of the company for upside growth. Really, the unit prices of GE stock have consistently lagged behind their peers in the industrial sector in the last one decade. That alone is enough for the investing public to deride the current business strategies of the company. GE dividend policy under Immelt is another source of concern for many investors.

Indeed, the majority of shareholders who bought the shares of General Electric a short while ago may not be comfortable with the inability of the stock to break above the $25 price level except those who bought into the company at $6 a share some years ago. However, I supposed that those who are net buyers of GE stocks should wish for low prices for an extended period so that they could accumulate more shares of the company.

Two companies that have been around for some time now are Imperial Oil (IMO) and Pembina Pipeline (PBA). Political instability in the Middle East has also given an extra relevance to the reserves found at this region, so let us see what the future holds and what gurus think of them.

    Cost overruns and abandoned projects
As a result of these factors, cost overruns have become quite common in Alberta. For instance, Imperial Oil (NYSEMKT: IMO  ) said it exceeded its cost estimates for the first phase of its Kearl bitumen mining facility by about C$2 billion. And some companies have even decided to abandon expensive projects altogether.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ashraf Eassa]

Next, it is interesting to note that Samsung (SSNLF.PK) recently announced a device called the "Galaxy Tab 3 Kids", which is an Android based competitor to the LeapPad product line in the sense that it comes layered with a UI specifically targeted for children much in the same way that the LeapPad Ultra is. Of course, LeapFrog will (rightly) argue that its application ecosystem is more robust on the education side of things, but this is the sort of disruption - particularly by general purpose hardware - that can eventually spell disaster in the long run, particularly as a player like Samsung (which often in-sources many of its own parts) can drive prices down while maintaining reasonable margins and forcing out the smaller more niche players in a given space.

  • [By Russ Fischer]

Since barely a week before the show, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) announced that it was "in production" on a new 3D NAND process. Since 3D NAND is considered the holy grail of NAND technology of the future, you would think that Samsung would be a shoe-in for the product of the year at the 2013 Flash Summit. And If you though that, you would have been wrong. The actual winner of the Best of Show award was Micron's (MU) new 16nm planar NAND memory made with the HKMG (High K Metal Gate) process. In order for Micron to have won this award, the new 16nm must be a more elegant process than we thought.

So in the prepaid market, surprisingly enough, Apple has actually scored points, despite the fact that it's a high-end high priced device maker. LG however is probably the biggest winner, because NPD tells us it doubled its market share, while Samsung (SSNLF.PK) has remained in the number one position having retained its market share. The biggest surprise of all however is that Nokia (NOK) is not on this list.
